(HIGHLIGHTS) CONCACAF Futsal Championship Day 1

Futsal never stops. At the same time we were saying goodbye to the UEFA Futsal Champions League for this season, a tournament of huge importance kicked off in the CONCACAF region.

CONCACAF Futsal Championship (CFC) will determine the best national team in the North and Central America region, including the Caribbean region. Moreover, the four semifinalists of the tournament will automatically qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania later this year.

Cuba 1-4 Nicaragua

After being absent from the CFC for more than 20 years, Nicaragua staged an upset in the first match of the tournament defeating favored Cuba in Group D. Kreyton Downs, Lester Kripp, Juan Zepeda scored for Nicaragua, including an own goal by Cuba.

Roger Moraton was the sole scorer for Cuba.

United States 1-1 El Salvador

El Salvador has been absent from CFC even longer than Honduras, since 1996! They started their second appearance in the major tournament against the United States who is a team to keep a close eye on.

A thrilling match in Group D ended in a 1-1 draw, but it was a proper nailbiter until the very end.

Samuel Munoz gave the lead for El Salvador, but Everson Maciel's astonishing bicycle kick turned some heads and secured a point for the USA.

Suriname 1-11 Panama

Panama, as the team who finished second in the last edition of the CFC, was a firm favorite against the new generation of Suriname futsal players and they have duly delivered with a big win to open Group B.

Carlos Perez recorded a hat trick, Abdiel Castrellon, Nagdiel Del Rosaio, and Abdiel Ortiz each scored two goals, while Oscar Hinks and Aquiles Campos added goals for the Canaleros.

Brewster Milito was the sole scorer for Suriname.

Haiti 0-7 Costa Rica

Costa Rica is the current back-to-back champion of the CFC and they have started the tournament in full force defeating Haiti 7-0 in Group C.

Minor Cabalceta scored a hat trick, while Milinton Tijerino’s scored two. Goals from Juan Cordero and Jose Guevara completed the scoreboard.

Dominican Republic 2-4 Guatemala

Former winners of the competition in 2008 and the third-placed team in the 2016 edition of the CFC, Guatemala opened the 2021 CFC with a victory in Group A against the Dominican Republic.

Alan Aguilar, Marvin Sandoval, Alex Alay, and Pablo Gonzalez scored for Guatemala, while Marco Gomez and Steven Dominguez found the back of the net for the Dominican Republic.

The CFC continues today with five more matches:

  • Canada - Haiti (18:00)
